Information from Sheila - Jenny Anselmo (Sciachitanos granddaughter)The overall story of the family as we know it is that Vito and Antonio Sciachitano's uncle owned a restaurant and asked Vito Sciachitano who lived in Sambucca Sicilily to come to America and work for him. Vito came over on a boat to Louisiana and then on to Des Moines. Cecida Anselmo, Marian Anselmos sister was ready here and married Dick Fiori. Her other sister Josephine Anselmo married Salvatore Vertolino and moved to Philadelphia. The rest of the Anselmo family followed then on to Philadelphia. Anna Sciachitano the only sister of Vito knew someone in Philadelphia and that's how Vito met Marion. Then Jenny (Vincenza) Anselmo met Antonio of course through them and brothers married sisters. They had a huge lavish wedding in Philadelphia on July 19, 1926, that Jenny (Vincenza) Anselmo spoke of continually until the dementia started. Antonio's uncle broke his leg and sold his restaurant to him. Antonio also had 2 other restaurants in downtown Des Moines: 'You & I' and 'NY Coney Island'. But Jenny (Vincenza) Anselmo made him
sell it all off before she would marry him. I never really understood why because that's what he knew and he continued to work for others in food service his entire life. And so it goes, were probably still the only Italian family in the Des Moines area that doesn't have a restaurant!
